Kristine Mazza was arrested after crashing her car with her girl on board, while allegedly driving under the influence of drugs in Long Island (NY).
According to Suffolk County Police, Mazza, 33, of Smithtown, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs, aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger, endangering the welfare of a minor and criminal content.
The woman was driving her vehicle on Harned Road in Commack when she rear-ended another car around 9:50 am Tuesday, the 19th, police said. Mazza’s 4-year-old daughter was sitting in the back seat and was not injured in the crash.
Police later determined that Mazza was under the influence of drugs and took her into custody. Her daughter was taken to a family member to ensure her well-being. The driver will be processed in the First District Court in Central Islip at a later date, he detailed. Pix11.
It’s a serious crime driving while intoxicated with children in the vehicle, according to the “Leandra’s Law”, named for Leandra Rosado, an 11-year-old Hispanic girl who was killed in a traffic accident caused by a drunk driver on Henry Hudson Parkway in Manhattan in 2009.
In a more recent case, in April, Héctor Ortiz, 64, was charged with vehicular manslaughter for the accident that caused the death of the young paramedic Zhon Gerard Sherman (26), who was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle in Brooklyn (NYC). The collision also left injured two girls aged 6 and 9, daughters of Ortiz. According to authorities, the Hispanic was apparently driving his jeep high on methadone and marijuana when it crashed into Sherman, and I didn’t have a driver’s license.
