A trial of drug trafficking on a grand scale begins this morning at the Bremen Regional Court: Two men from Bremen are accused of having resold large quantities of cocaine and marijuana. As suspected members of a gang, they are said to have brought drugs worth almost 9 million euros into circulation nationwide.

The accused are a 39-year-old man with Turkish citizenship and a 33-year-old Russian-German from Bremen, according to a regional court spokesman. The 39-year-old is said to have conducted the criminal business from Bremen, according to the allegation. He made a profit of over one million euros, according to the indictment.

Defendants face long prison terms

His 33-year-old accomplice is accused of working as a drug courier. The gang is said to have obtained the drugs from the Netherlands, among others. If convicted, the men face long prison terms for trading in narcotics.

Investigations are underway against other alleged members of the gang. At the beginning of last year, the French police cracked an app that thousands of criminals use to communicate with one another in encrypted form. German investigators also evaluated these chats: Traces led to the defendants of the trial today and two other alleged gangs who also have to answer before the Bremen Regional Court.
