“Our young bourgeois people from the 8th arrondissement of Marseille, when they go to buy a bar of cannabis resin in the northern districts, they are also somewhere at the origin of the assassination of their brother in humanity”estimates Friday December 22 on franceinfo Nicolas Bessone, public prosecutor of Marseille, while since the start of the year 47 people have died in the City, linked to drug trafficking.
It is the result of a turf war between two clans, Yoda and DZ Mafia. The networks are recruiting more and more “illegal aliens” in all of France. “They are not necessarily aware of the vital risk they are running”he said.
Franceinfo: Who are these victims?
Nicolas Bessone : We do indeed have senior criminal figures, but you also have young people who engage in sales at deal points and who have no strategic interest in being eliminated other than spreading terror. Then people who live in these cities who will be the subject of attacks for this takeover. And then finally, the last category, these are collateral victims who will receive a stray bullet.
The number of deaths is rising sharply. For what reasons ?
There is a very strong cyclical element, it is the war between two mafia clans, Yoda and DZ Mafia, which are at the origin of approximately 70% of these narchomicides. You have both an evolution of rejuvenation and ultraviolence which is undeniable, but you also have a very strong increase linked to this particular conflict.
How come we cannot arrest the members of these networks even though they are known to the police?
It’s very complicated. First, the network heads are often on the run. The prison administration is very proactive in dealing with these phenomena, but we have noted for many years that it is still possible, unfortunately, to continue this trafficking behind prison bars. It is a long process. It is a daily struggle that we wage with the judicial police and the investigating judges, with very strong determination.
“We do indeed have a deterioration in the situation. In my opinion, we must consider the response globally, very strong repression, but also social support, across the entire spectrum from consumers to drug traffickers.”

France will have judges in Dubai, in the Caribbean. What can it change?
This can facilitate mutual assistance with local legal authorities. It is a facilitative role on the part of the magistrate who will know the jurisdiction and the magistrates of the countries with which we wish to cooperate very well. Necessarily, this will have positive effects since, as you know, narcotics do not stop at the borders of the national territory and it is up to us to adapt. This is what the Minister of Justice, Mr. Dupond-Moretti, did by creating these liaison magistrate positions.
Are these young people who run the deal points aware of the risks they are taking?
We still have young people from Marseille who are naturally involved in drug trafficking, but we are seeing a phenomenon of recruitment throughout France through social networks. These are what we call “djobeurs” and also illegal foreigners. They are not necessarily aware of the vital risk they run by finding themselves on these deal points. This is why we are going to try to create communication adapted to this young audience on social networks, TikTok, with very strong messages so that they are aware of the risks involved.
Is our society too tolerant of consumers?
Our young bourgeois people from the eighth arrondissement of Marseille, when they go to buy a bar of cannabis resin in the northern districts, very indirectly, but totally really, they are also somewhere at the origin of the assassination of their brother in humanity .
