Drug Production in Afghanistan Decreases by 95% after US Troop Withdrawal

In Afghanistan, drug sales fell by 95% after the US withdrew its troops from the region. This was announced by Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev.

“From the end of 2022 to the present, drug production in Afghanistan has decreased by 95%. <…> This is what happens when someone who was really interested in exporting heroin to Russia and other countries leaves the region,” Medvedev said in his telegram channel.

He noted that poppy sowing has decreased in Afghanistan. According to Medvedev, the Taliban (an organization under UN sanctions for terrorist activities) cleared the country of prohibited substances in less than a year.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan are doing great job in the fight against drug trafficking. He noted that building a working dialogue has no alternative and is fully consistent with the interests of the region, reports TV channel 360.

The situation in Afghanistan worsened in 2021 after the United States withdrew its troops from there. As a result, the Taliban movement (a terrorist organization banned in Russia) launched an active offensive and captured Kabul on August 15.
