Drug policy will be financed with money from drug trafficking • La Nación

In 2024, 69% of $215,335 million from assets seized from drug trafficking will be allocated to the “oxygen” component of the National Drug Policy. The remaining 31% will go to the “suffocation” component.

The National Narcotics Council issued a resolution in which it redefines the allocation of resources from drug trafficking. The goal is to strengthen the National Drug Policy of the government of President Gustavo Petro, which aims to promote rural development in areas dedicated to coca production.

The resolution details a budget allocation of $215,335 million for next year, distributing specific funds to various entities. Among them, they are intended:

$85,640 million to the Ministry of Agriculture

$44,350 million to the Ministry of Defense

$30,393 million to the Ministry of Justice

$24,391 million to the Ministry of Health

$22,847 million to the National Police

$7,734 million to the Ministry of the Interior.

69% of those $215,335 million from assets seized from drug trafficking will be allocated to the “oxygen” component of the National Drug Policy. The remaining 31% will go to the “suffocation” component.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development will receive most of the resources, this being the first time that it is assigned money from the Fund for Rehabilitation, Social Investment and the Fight against Organized Crime (Frisco), which comes from sales, rentals and administration of assets in forfeiture.

The National Narcotics Council approved the budget reallocation with the support of eight of its nine members. Votes in favor were cast by: the Attorney General’s Office, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Police and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The Attorney General’s Office opted to abstain.
