Security forces Mexico arrests the son of a drug lord, Joaquin”El ChapoGuzman The riots came after the arrest on Thursday (5/1) local time, just days before US President Joe Biden’s visit.
The news agency reports it AFP extensionOn Friday (6/1/2023), Ovidio Guzman, nicknamed “El Raton” (Rat), was arrested in the northwestern Mexico city of Culiacan and flown to the capital Mexico City in a military aircraft, the Mexican Defense Minister Luis Cresencio Sandoval journalist.
He said the arrests were the result of six months of intelligence work to track down the 32-year-old man, who has allegedly helped run his father’s operations ever since. El Chapo extradited to the United States in 2017.
The US government has offered a reward of up to $5 million for information leading to the arrest of Ovid Guzman. The United States accuses him of being a key player in the infamous Sinaloa Cartel.
The arrest sparked an angry reaction from Guzman’s men. Unrest marked by shootings and arson rocked Culiacan after the arrest. The arrests come as Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador prepares to welcome Biden next week to a summit of US leaders in Mexico City, where security is expected to be high on the agenda.
Sinaloa state governor Ruben Rocha said a National Guard officer was killed and at least 28 people were injured in the riots following the arrests. Schools have been temporarily closed and sporting events in Culiacan have been cancelled.
A passenger jet and an Air Force plane were hit at Culiacan Airport. Videos on social media showed passengers and Aeromexico airline employees in the terminal hunching behind counters as gunfire rang out. No injuries were reported there.
Armed men from drug cartel Cars and trucks burned at several intersections in the city and authorities said 19 checkpoints had been erected.
