Drowning and missing a day, this elementary school student was found safe thanks to clinging to tree roots

KUPANG, KOMPAS.com – Tim sar Kupang, managed to find Leonard Laimeheriwa, a student from Babau Village, East Kupang District, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), which disappeared after drowning in Kali Bileno, Amabi District of East Oefeto.

The 11-year-old elementary school student was found safe thanks to being caught in a tree root.

“It was found at 11.00 WITA. Leonard went missing yesterday afternoon at around 15.40 WITA,” said the Public Relations Officer of the Kupang Aiptu Police, Randy Hidayat to Kompas.com, Monday (17/5/2021).

Randy said the search for Leonard by the SAR team was carried out from yesterday afternoon until evening.

Then, the search continued this morning starting at 08.00 WITA.

The joint SAR team consisted of Basarnas Kupang, East Kupang Police, NTT Police, Koramil 1604 – 02 and the people of Biloleno Village.

After being found, Leonard was immediately handed over to his biological father Jidon Laimeheriwa (41), who is a member of the TNI.

“The family has also performed thanksgiving services, because Leonard Laimeheriwa was found in a state of life,” said Randy.

Contacted separately, the Head of the East Kupang Police, Iptu, Victor Hari Saputra, said that Leonard was sucked into a whirlpool.

“Since yesterday at 16.00 WITA, he got caught in the water at the root of a tree and his head was above so he could breathe,” said Victor.

When stuck, continued Victor, Leonard had not slept since last night and continued to hold the tree roots.

“He kept holding the roots of the tree, because the water was swift. Until the Combined Basarnas team and the Air Police arrived, they managed to find him at 11.00 WITA,” said Victor.

Head of the Kupang Search and Relief Office (Basarnas), Emy Freezer, said that his party received a report related to this accident at around 17.10 WITA.

After that, the members went straight to the location after first coordinating with related parties such as the police, BPBD and the Kupang District Social Service and the families of the victims.

During the search, the wind direction was northeast-southeast with a speed of 6-20 knots and the weather was in a cloudy sunny location.

“Thank God, we were found safe under the waterfall. Earlier we had been taken to the Puskesmas to be treated medically,” he said.

Previously, it was reported that Leonard Laimeheriwa (11), an elementary school student from Babau Village, East Kupang District, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), went missing during his recreation in the river.

The boy disappeared while bathing in Bileno River, which is in Dusun II Bileno, Fatukanutu Village, Amabi Oefeto District, Kupang Regency.

“It happened on Sunday, May 16, 2021, yesterday afternoon at around 15.40 WITA,” said Kupang Police Public Relations Officer Aiptu Randy Hidayat to Kompas.com, Monday (17/5/2021).
