The survivors were taken to the island of Lampedusa. In the first months of this year, many more people arrived there than in recent years. This is partly due to the stricter policy of the Tunisian government against migrants. Because more and more people want to make the crossing quickly on small rickety boats, more people are also drowning in the Mediterranean.
Also on Sunday, according to local media, more than eight hundred migrants arrived in Lampedusa within 24 hours. In the four days before, hardly any boats came to the island, because the weather conditions were bad. According to news agency ANSA all 21 boats that arrived on Sunday departed from Tunisia.
