The victim is a 22-year-old man from Nijmegen, police said. Some other swimmers went to look for him, but they also lost him out of sight. He disappeared under water many tens of meters from the shore of the day beach, according to a spokesman.
“I saw the man go into the water to retrieve a ball for another child. He suddenly went under three times and then he disappeared,” an eyewitness told the newspaper.
After other bathers had alerted the fire brigade, they searched the former gravel hole with a boat with sonar. At around 3:45 p.m., the fire service located the man, after which divers brought the victim to the surface.
Other swimmers were removed from the swimming pool on Herenvennenweg after 2 p.m. The area was cordoned off with ribbons.
