Drove into a crowd in Berlin – several injured – VG

One person is dead and eight injured after a car crashed into a sidewalk and through a shop window in the middle of the German capital on Wednesday morning. The police state that the driver of the car has been arrested.

Storavisen Bild reports that at least one has died and that eight have been injured. The newspaper writes the same RBB24 and Berlin morning post. Everyone quotes the fire department for the information.

Reuters previously reported that the fire brigade had confirmed that around 30 people were injured, but the fire brigade informs Berliner Morgenpost that it was only an early estimate of how many could be injured.

The incident took place near the Kaiser Wilhelm church, which is located along the famous Kurfürstendamm street in central Germany’s capital.

Pictures from the place show a gray car that has driven in through the window of a shop along the street. The rear end of the car protrudes onto the sidewalk.

Photos also show people from the emergency services on site, as well as several café tables that are overturned on the sidewalk outside the store.

Police confirm that they have arrested what they believe is the driver of the car, German media report.

It is unclear whether the incident happened on purpose, or whether it was an accident, but a witness informs Berliner Morgenpost that the car kept a very high speed.

There should be several hundred meters between where the incident is believed to have started and where the car’s journey ended.

Large police forces have moved out. According to local media, they have armed themselves with machine guns.

The scene of the incident is close to the place where a man in December 2016 drove into a Christmas market with a truck. 11 people were killed at the time.
