Drought in Lower Franconia: Is there now a huge demand for water from the Main?

The Main runs 325 kilometers through Lower Franconia, slowed down by 30 barrages. 110 cubic meters of water per second flow downstream. At least that’s how high the average discharge of the Main is seen over the whole year. A cubic meter is a thousand liters of water. So it’s no wonder that the Main arouses desires in the region that is becoming increasingly dry. Because groundwater is a scarce resource in Lower Franconia. According to the Bavarian State Office for the Environment, after 18 dry years from 2003 to 2020, Lower Franconia was missing more than 350 liters of new groundwater per square meter in May 2021.
