Francois Durand, a salt miner from the Guernsey region in northwestern France, acknowledged that his industry is one of the few short-term beneficiaries of climate change.
According to him, this year’s harvest is about twice as high as the increase in temperature and lack of rainfall has accelerated the evaporation of salt water.
Many industry representatives told Reuters that they have enough salt reserves to cover the next couple of years.
The positivity of salt miners contrasts sharply with those groups of society for whom the lack of water causes many problems. For instance, risotto rice producers in northern Italy have said their fields may become too salty due to the drought.
According to data published this week by the European Drought Observatory, 45% of the land in the European Union is at risk of drought. Another 15% of the area is under the highest warning level, which means plants and crops are damaged.
