Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasiums mourns the loss of long-time headmaster Bernward Monzel – Freiburg

Bernward Monzel directed the Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium in Freiburg for 18 years. He has now died at the age of 76 after a serious illness.

The long-time head of the Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium in the Herdern district, Bernward Monzel, died after a serious illness at the age of 76.

This was announced by the school he headed from 1992 to 2010. Monzel’s time at the grammar school on Brucknerstraße was marked by upheavals – from the fundamental renovation of the school building to the creation of profiles from grade 8 to the conversion from G 9 to G 8. Last but not least, Droste was included in the Unesco circle during Monzel’s time -Project schools added. Even in retirement, Monzel continued to work in teacher training at the university.

He, the son of a teacher’s household, discovered his enthusiasm for education during his legal clerkship in the wild 1970s at the Keplergymnasium. He had previously studied theology, history and politics in Freiburg. On his retirement he said: “I don’t want to be the center of attention as a person. I’ve always seen myself as part of a team.”
