“Dropbox Announces Layoffs Amidst Slowdown in Cloud Market and Push Towards AI Innovation”

New wave of layoffs in US tech. In the wake of Gafam, who have “thanked” tens of thousands of employees in recent months, Dropbox has also decided to reduce its payroll. The company, known for its cloud file storage service, announces a 16% cut in its workforce, or 500 people.

In a message to his collaborators, Drew Houston, the boss of Dropbox, explained the reasons. He cites in particular the slowdown in growth in the cloud market. “The headwinds generated by the economic downturn have put pressure on our customers, and therefore on our business. As a result, some investments that offered positive returns are no longer sustainable”he wrote.

Critical shift towards AI

He also mentions the recent rise of AI due to ChatGPT, which is pushing the company to reinvent itself faster. “Over the past few months, AI has sparked the global collective imagination by expanding the potential market for our next generation faster than any of us could have anticipated. However, this momentum has also alerted our competitors to many of the same opportunities”he explained.

Drew Houston said Dropbox has been recruiting new talent over the past two years to develop services and offerings around AI, with more industry hires planned in the future. A shift that is therefore to the detriment of hundreds of employees who were responsible for the historical activities of Dropbox.
