Residents of Dronten who have traffic signs, signposts, street signs or other items belonging to the municipality at home can hand them in with impunity. Quite a few plates are said to have been taken over the years, especially by students. The municipality hopes to get them back with the action.
“It’s a bit of a prank: removing road signs and taking them with you after an evening at the pub. They are seen as a kind of trophies,” Bart Achtereekte, president of the USRA student association, told Broadcasting Flevoland.
The action was set up by the municipality, in collaboration with Aeres University of Applied Sciences and the student associations. The taking of road signs by students is happening in many places in the country and is not a recent thing either. It has now been decided in Dronten that something has to change.
few hundred euros
Achtereekte: “In conversations we had with the municipality, it was stated that more signs had recently been stolen. The municipality is concerned about that, which is understandable.”
The municipality is disappointed by the thefts, among other things, because the signs are quite expensive. According to a spokesperson, a sign, including placing, costs a few hundred euros. “It’s a nice student thing, but it costs the municipality a lot of money.”
