The once-Toyota-owned company will reopen, but it will no longer make cars.
The former Toyota plant in St. Petersburg will start producing drones, reports the Russian publication Motor, referring to information from the TASS news agency. The company will be engaged in the development and production of unmanned aerial systems in the special economic zone (SEZ) “St. Petersburg”.
Until the spring of 2022, Camry and RAV4 were produced there, but then the factory workers were fired, and the territory was transferred to another management. The latest plans that have been made public show that another 160 hectares will be added to the territory and the infrastructure will be arranged for the installation of new production plants.
One of these companies will manufacture drones, but their specification is being kept under wraps. The facility could also produce E-Neva electric cars of the Almaz-Antey concern, but only in 2026.
