Footage of killer whales hunting and killing a great white shark is garnering attention on social media. This drone video, filmed in South Africa last year, shows five killer whales circling and attacking a great white shark.
In October 2022, scientists released the video as part of a study published in Ecology, the journal of The Ecological Society of America. The video was released to confirm that killer whales, known as top predators, hunt great white sharks. This is the first time in world history that drone footage of such a hunt has been filmed.
It was possible to film such a scene after an hour-long investigation. The footage was captured by observing these whales from a helicopter. The video shows a group of five killer whales chasing a great white shark before finally surrounding it, attacking it and subduing it to death.
The researchers who saw the video also evaluated that when the whales surrounded the white shark, instead of breaking through the circle and trying to escape, it tried to fool the whales by lying still and pretending to be lifeless. This is the method adopted by sea turtles and others to escape from their enemies. But because killer whales are highly intelligent and social creatures, this deception is not successful, said Dr. Simon Elven says: He noted that killer whales’ gregarious hunting practices make them such powerful hunters.
