Drone Attacks on Moscow: Recent Incidents and the Impact on Residents

In recent times, the residents of the Russian capital, Moscow, have experienced the war up close.

Several nights, many have woken up to drone attacks on the city. Last Friday, Russia reportedly stopped a Ukrainian drone over Moscow. The attacks have so far claimed no lives, but have caused damage to several buildings and frightened residents in the capital.

Spokesman for Ukraine’s military intelligence service, Andrej Yusov, tells Kyiv Post that the Russians must now expect “daily attacks” and that “security has become a distant word for the citizens of Moscow”.

– Perhaps this trend will lead the citizens of Moscow to some correct conclusions – whether they should believe Russian TV and Russian propaganda or not, and whether they should continue to support the criminal regime or not, says Yusov to the newspaper.

Friday’s attack caused, among other things, that Vnukovo airport in Moscow was closed for a period. It seems to be something the Ukrainians want, according to Yusov.

– As a result of Putin’s war against Ukraine, the Ukrainians have been deprived of the opportunity to use air transport. Our planes and airports are not working or are broken. Today, Muscovites could feel something similar, says Yusov.

Earlier this week, Russian media reported that the Norwegian footballer Mathias Normann had left Moscow because of the drone attacks last week.

Must have left Russia

Russia has repeatedly called the attacks Ukrainian terrorism. On August 2, Marija Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, came out strongly against the recent drone attacks on Moscow. She compared them to the September 11 attacks in the United States:

– It is unfair to compare these events in terms of the number of people killed. But we cannot help but see that the aim is to destroy civil infrastructure, with the psychological effects it has, said the spokeswoman.

Zakharova believes the West is guilty of gross hypocrisy in connection with these attacks on Russian soil.

– I remind you that such terrorist attacks are always condemned in the West – but only when they take place in the West. When they are carried out in other countries, such as Syria and Russia, there is not a single word of condolence or condemnation, she maintained, emphasizing:

– But now the West has gone further.
