Driving license withdrawal: do you have to inform your insurance?

If your driving license is revoked, having car insurance becomes useless since you no longer have the right to drive. But, beyond the financial consideration, you are required to inform your insurance, including when the sentence is provisional, as is the case in certain administrative or judicial suspensions.

Withdrawal of license: you must inform your insurance

You are required to inform your car insurer in the event of withdrawal of your driving license (or invalidation thereof, i.e. when all points have been subtracted), whatever the cause. . Even a temporary withdrawal must be reported, as stipulated Article L.113-2 of the Insurance Code, since this sentence is a new circumstance which renders obsolete the responses previously made to the insurer when subscribing to the contract. You have fifteen days from the date of withdrawal to make this declaration.

How to inform your insurance company of your license withdrawal?

To be sure that your insurance company is well informed of your license withdrawal, you must send it a registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt. Your letter must mention your first and last name, your contract number, and indicate that your driving license has been withdrawn (documents showing the date of withdrawal in support).

Upon receipt of the letter, the insurer will be able to modify or even terminate your contract. Indeed, depending on the seriousness of the offense leading to a license suspension, the insurer is entitled to either increase the cost of your contract (article A.121-1-2 of the Insurance Code sets the maximum amount of increases that can be applied), or to put an end to it if the suspension follows an accident under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.
