Driving in Extreme Hot Weather: Tips for Maintaining Tires and Ensuring Safety

Jakarta

Since the last few months, the weather in a number of points in Indonesia has been very hot. In fact, there are several areas where the air temperature almost reaches 40 degrees Celsius. So, under these conditions, what should you pay attention to before and while driving?

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) explained that humidity levels in most parts of Indonesia are currently quite high, because geographically Indonesia is surrounded by warm oceans and is located in a tropical region.

This condition also has an impact on private car drivers due to the growing opinion in the public that tires can melt in extreme hot weather like now. However, according to a number of studies, new tires can soften at temperatures of around 50-60 degrees Celsius.

This also depends on several factors, such as the particular type of rubber used, the thickness of the tire, and the length of heat exposure. That’s why, as vehicle owners, we need to pay attention to and maintain the condition of the tires.

“Even though tires cannot melt due to scorching hot weather due to a number of factors, tires still have to be cared for. It is important to ensure that the air pressure is checked regularly according to the air pressure standards that exist in each car model. The ideal condition for checking the air pressure is when you want to “High tire pressure has the potential to make tires more susceptible to punctures and rupture,” said Head of Original Equipment (OE) Bridgestone Indonesia, Fisa Rizqiano.

Fisa suggests that, in extreme hot conditions like now, the best tires to use are summer tires or all season tires. Because, he said, both tires are designed for high temperatures or heat resistance.

Here are the things you need to pay attention to before driving Bridgestone style

Pay attention to tire air

Some of you may be wondering, what is the correct tire pressure in hot weather? Driving with underinflated tires is not a good idea, especially in extreme hot weather like now.

Without proper air pressure, the tire’s internal components, such as steel, composite, and rubber, will flex more. As a result, tires can experience internal damage, experience increased heat, and become weaker and more susceptible to blowouts.

If you plan to drive a long distance when the weather is very hot outside, it’s a good idea to always check the tire pressure when the car is stopped.

Pay Attention to Tire Wear and Damage

If you notice cracks, scuffs, bulging, or excessive tire wear, you should stop, wait for the tires to cool, and visit your local repair shop for a tire inspection.

Driving with damaged tires in the summer increases the chance of a tire blowing out, especially if the tire overheats. So, when a tire seems unsafe to drive, immediately replace it with a spare tire.

If you see that there are nails or screws stuck in the tire, there is no need to panic because the tire can still be checked and its status known whether it is still suitable for use.

However, if the internal structural elements of the tire are damaged or the tire is blistered and bulging, replacing it with a new tire is the best choice because this damage cannot be repaired for safety and comfort when driving.
