Mayor Petr Ryška explained that after the introduction of blue zones, parked cars disappeared from Telečská Street and the empty road entices you to drive faster. “The speedometer is a psychological element, when the driver sees that he is going faster, he slows down. At least the more decent ones do it that way,” he said.
The city management expects that speed measurement will be enough, it is not necessary to immediately send fines for exceeding fifty. Nevertheless, the town hall asked the police to monitor the speed in the area. She didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. “The approach to Jihlava from Pístov is the place we focus on when measuring speed. As for speeding, however, it does not deviate excessively compared to other comparable roads,” said police spokeswoman Jana Kroutilová.

Not even Jihlava police chief Stanislav Maštera thinks that this is an extremely critical road. “On the other hand, the speed limit is occasionally exceeded here, but it is the same on a number of other roads,” he said. Kroutilová added that, in general, compliance with speed is problematic on roads farther from the center, in peripheral parts or on long clear sections.
In that context, the newspaper wondered if it makes sense to measure speed even in sections where drivers can already see the patrol from a distance. “The fact that, for example, a driver sees police officers measuring speed and therefore slows down is certainly a positive phenomenon that contributes to traffic safety. The task of police officers is also to act preventively. Therefore, it makes sense to control the speed of vehicles even on clear roads, where drivers can see the police and reduce their speed if necessary,” answered the spokeswoman.
A radar similar to the one in Telečská Street is also newly installed in the repaired Lipová Street, where the new surface could tempt you to drive faster. In total, drivers can find sixteen of them in the city. But none of them fines too fast driving.
Sectional measurement is something else. Drivers are fined there. Cameras monitor the speed in the Jihlavský tunnel, on Hosová in the direction of Pelhřimov, and there will also be a new measurement in Helenín. For now, everything is being planned, the town hall estimates installation for this year or next year. “The main reason is road safety. We have proven that drivers in this section very often break the rules and it is not within the power of the police to stand there with radar all the time,” concluded Jan Frenc, the head of the Jihlava police at the time, a year ago, when Deník informed about the news.

On social networks, people are asking why the city hall installed an information radar and not retarders, which would have slowed down the cars more reliably. “If the meter can handle it, it’s a better option than retarders,” replied Ryška. According to him, it is not advisable to install cross thresholds where public transport runs. “Both measures make sense somewhere, and at the moment we think that meters are more appropriate on long straight sections, but there must also be a police check from time to time,” assessed Ryška.
Councilor Petr Piáček then added that retarders are used in places where cars need to be slowed down to thirty kilometers per hour. “We are trying to discipline the driver and if that doesn’t work, we will have to move on to the next steps,” he said. However, according to the town hall, after ten days, it is still too early to assess how well the radar has proven itself.
