Driver stopped for outstanding fine of 6.2 million euros

Traffic control

A car driver who had an outstanding fine of 6.2 million euros was removed from traffic during a traffic control in South Limburg yesterday. The FPS Finance confirms that this is not an error. “It is a penal fine imposed by a court. The person now has 30 days to pay or they will lose their vehicle.”

During a coordinated police action in Hasselt – with the cooperation of the police, customs, the Flemish Tax Authorities and the FPS Employment – a vehicle was stopped on Wednesday with a driver who had a very large fine outstanding, 6,238,607 euros to be precise. to be.

Had anyone collected that amount of speeding fines? Was it a mistake? Ultimately not, as it turns out after asking Customs (part of the FPS Finance) and the FPS Justice.

“This story is correct and is not a mistake,” responds Francis Adyns, spokesperson for the FPS Finance. “We often carry out roadside checks with an ANPR license plate scanner. A person has now been rightly stopped because he still had an outstanding fine. It appears to be a confiscation ordered by a court. Justice sends us such fines, and it is our assignment and expertise to collect that balance.”

Public sale

According to Adyns, the person was unable to cough up the amount immediately. “The procedure is then that the car is immobilized. The person then has 30 days to pay the amount. If that doesn’t work, the car will be seized and sold.”

“If it comes to that, the sale will probably not be sufficient to meet the balance,” Adyns continues. “But we have a range of other options to collect a debt. This ranges from garnishing wages, seizing rental income, assets in bank accounts, or engaging a bailiff.”
