On October 1, during dynamic checks on the A31 in the South-North direction, customs officers from the Thionville internal surveillance brigade (BSI) checked a truck registered in Slovenia parked at the Entrange rest area. The driver told them he was transporting clothes between Spain and Germany. The customs officers then opened one of the pallet racks and came across a box containing herbal cannabis present in heat-sealed bags. Following this discovery, the driver was placed in customs detention and the heavy goods vehicle was transported to the customs brigade.
2,487,800 euros fine
But the story does not end there. At the unit’s headquarters, the agents then checked the second pallet rack in which they found five identical boxes. A thorough search of the load consisting of 33 pallets of clothing then revealed 43 additional boxes, all containing herbal cannabis. The total gross weight of the cannabis herb ultimately amounts to 518.30 kg! Initial investigations carried out by the agents made it possible to determine that the truck was under surveillance by the Austrian authorities. It emerged from the offender’s interview that, according to his statements, this was his first journey with this transport company. Until now unknown to the courts, he admitted that he had doubts about the legality of the goods transported. At the request of the prosecution, he was handed over to the Metz Judicial Police service at the end of the procedure. Tried in immediate appearance this Thursday, October 5 by the Thionville court, the driver was sentenced to 3 years of imprisonment with committal warrant and confiscation of seals. He was also ordered to pay a customs fine of 2,487,800 euros.
