A driver from Berlin died in an accident on Monday on the Rügen Bridge in Stralsund.

As a police spokesman said on Tuesday, the 58-year-old woman drove her small car to the left on the oncoming lane when driving to Rügen and collided head-on with another car. The Berliner was trapped and, according to the police, died at the scene of the accident.

The federal highway 96, which leads over the Rügen bridge, was closed for four hours. Vehicles had to switch to the neighboring Rügendamm.

The 64-year-old driver of the other car and the 67-year-old passenger from the Vorpommern-Rügen district came from the island and suffered serious injuries in the impact. These should not be life-threatening. They came to a clinic.

It is still unclear why the person who caused the accident on the Rügen Bridge suddenly drove so far to the left that she also crossed the blocked middle lane. According to the public prosecutor’s office, an expert should clarify the cause of the accident.

The property damage was estimated at 30,000 euros.
