A driver evading police hit and killed a grandmother in Brooklyn, New York, while four people were injured.including an 8-year-old boy on Saturday night, authorities said.
New York police said officers tried to pull over a vehicle with mismatched license plates. However, as they approached, the driver hit the gas and headed north on Ralph Avenue, ABC7 NY reported.
While crossing at 163 Ralph Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, the suspect rammed his vehicle into a crossing grandmother identified as 67-year-old Lynn Christopher, as well as an 8-year-old boy who remains hospitalized in critical condition. A bicyclist and two other pedestrians were also injured.
The NYPD arrested and interviewed a person apparently involved in the case, but he was released after it was discovered that he was not in the vehicle that caused the accident. Meanwhile, two passengers in the car fled the scene.
Mayor Eric Adams held a press conference after the tragic accident in which he mourned the loss of Christopher, and called on prosecutors and legislators to prosecute those who commit these crimes.
“We are asking our legislators to do a real analysis of the repeated crimes that the same people are committing.. And we’re asking our prosecutors to prosecute New Yorkers who don’t deserve this,” Adams said.
“We lost a grandmother tonight. We lost one of my neighbors. We lost a family member in my community. We have a child who is clinging to the life of him, ”said the mayor of the city of New York.
So far the investigations are ongoing. while the police are reviewing the surveillance video to find the suspects.
