A 30-year-old Hispanic man was fatally struck while riding a bicycle Sunday night in Philadelphia.
The incident was reported to have taken place in the 1900 block of North Howard Street at 8:33 p.m.
The deceased was identified as Eduardo Rosario Jiménez, a resident of North Banter Street. “We believe that the victim is Mexican, but we cannot confirm it at the moment. Someone made contact with relatives in that country because he has no relatives in Philadelphia, ”said Captain Mark Overwise.
The official explained that the cyclist was traveling on the street in an easterly direction and the truck, a Ford Econoline cargo truck, was turning left from Berks Street towards Howard Street when it hit the Hispanic head-on. “The driver must have felt something, because the impact was frontal,” Overwise said, while maintaining “when you make the decision to leave the scene of the crime, you made the decision to commit a crime.”
Paramedics treated the affected person, but he succumbed at the same scene of the events to the sustained injuries.
Hours before, another person was fatally run over and the driver fled the scene. She was a 43-year-old woman, who was crossing Oregon Avenue when she was struck right in the middle of her walk in the 600 block.
The victim was walking from north to south on the aforementioned road when the driver of a vehicle, a gray or silver mini van, hit him. “We have no evidence that in any of the incidents speed was an important factor. What we do know is that since it was raining, we want to give them the benefit of the doubt that there was little visibility, but we urge those who did this to turn themselves in because investigators have collected a lot of video and we are going to find them,” Overwise commented.
The official added that despite his years of experience in investigations of pedestrian deaths and traffic accidents, it does not cease to “amaze me” that people flee the place. “Do the right thing and turn yourself in because this is a human being and you have to have a sense of community.”
Anyone with additional details on any of these cases can contact 215-685-3181 or 911. A $10,000 reward for each incident is in effect for information leading to an arrest.
