Driver Daniil Kvyat gave up Formula 1 for a while and decided on WEC endurance races. He will drive under an Italian license, thereby avoiding having to condemn the war in Ukraine and the actions of Vladimir Putin.
Daniil Kvyat has found a way to still do what he loves, but it has made him an enemy of Russia.
The Russian was introduced as the fourth Lamborghini factory driver in the WEC endurance race for the 2024 season. He is currently racing for the Prema Racing team, which works with Lamborghini.
However, in order for Russian drivers to compete in international series under a neutral flag, they would have to sign a document of political neutrality. In doing so, they would have to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Vladimir Putin’s actions. Daniil Kvyat didn’t do it, but he found another solution.
They will play the Italian anthem for the Russians
Many Russian riders refused to sign such a statement and gave up their dreams of participating in various competitions. Daniil Kvyat also did not sign him, but decided to compete in the WEC under an Italian license and under the Italian flag. It helped that he moved to this country with his family as a child and trained there.
If Daniil Kvyat wins any competition, he will hear the Italian national anthem, which the Russians are outraged about. “I grew up in Italy and we decided that I would drive with an Italian license and under the Italian flag. This will be my future,” said the driver of the Prema Racing team, who, as reported by the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, replaced Roberto Kubica in the team.
