Driver arrested for beating old man on Long Island – NBC New York

NEW YORK – The driver responsible for a fatal accident in a Long Island neighborhood that may have been intentional has been arrested and charged with murder, police said.

Raymond Gallo was arrested on Friday on second-degree murder charges in the West Islip incident that killed 80-year-old Helga McNulty, according to police. He was subsequently prosecuted in the Suffolk County Criminal Court.

Gallo, 28, was driving along Tanglewood Road just before 9:30 pm on Oct.16 with McNulty as a passenger, police said, when he got out of the car near the Ryan Street intersection. Immediately afterwards, Gallo would make a U-turn and hit McNulty with his black Subaru while he was on the curb.

He later unloaded the car, which had crashed through a neighbor’s fence, at a nearby dead end, according to investigators. Neighbors said the incident was so bad that they ran out of their homes to see what was happening. It was then that they found the victim on the ground, lifeless.

McNulty was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police said Gallo and McNulty knew each other but did not say what the nature of their relationship was.

Investigators interviewed witnesses along the block and were looking for any security footage. Anyone who is aware of the incident is requested to contact the police.
