A driver ran over two boys on a sidewalk in Razgradsko and ran away. This happened shortly after midnight in the village of Yasenovets. After hours of searching, the driver was arrested.

The older of the boys – 16 years old – was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Razgrad hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the younger – 15 years old – had minor injuries.

The 21-year-old driver explained to the police that he fled for fear of being lynched by the relatives of the two boys’ families. However, the tests showed that he had consumed alcohol.

“After the accident occurred, the driver, according to him, got scared and left the scene of the accident,” said the head of the “Road Police” – Razgrad Teodor Todorov.

The boys were taken to hospital with multiple injuries. “One has a concussion and is placed in the Surgical Department. The other boy has a more severe craniocerebral injury and is placed in the Intensive Care Unit, where he is in a medically induced coma,” said the director of the Medical Center-Razgrad, Stanimir Georgiev.

After several hours of searching, the police found the fleeing driver. “Around 4 o’clock this morning the driver was located and taken into custody. The test showed the presence of alcohol in the blood – 1.24 per thousand. He explained that he used hard alcohol – about 50 grams of brandy and about 300 grams of vodka,” added Todorov.

People in Jasenovets are in shock. “We want him to stay in prison for the rest of his life, not to come out,” insisted Filiz – the sister of one of the injured boys. The case is under pre-trial proceedings.
