Ehrenkirchen (dpa / lsw) – large screen in an unfamiliar setting: In the middle of vineyards near Ehrenkirchen south of Freiburg, a drive-in cinema was opened on Friday night with around 100 vehicles. The open-air cinema was built in a large wine-growing area on the 330-meter-high Batzenberg, as the organizers announced at the premiere. It is a drive-in cinema with an unusual environment. The response was greater than expected. Many of the shows are sold out. Up to and including Monday (May 11th), two films would be shown daily. The drive-in cinema in the vineyards had been prepared for two and a half weeks.
With the corona crisis and the forced closure of cinemas in Germany in March, drive-in cinemas are making a comeback. They were built in many places in the southwest and are usually located in large parking lots. The drive-in cinema in Ehrenkirchen (Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district) is an exception, according to the operator.
Because of the great popularity, the programs have been extended several times, said a spokesman for the drive-in cinema in Offenburg (Ortenaukreis). In times of corona and limited leisure opportunities, people are grateful for alternative offers. The Offenburg drive-in cinema has been running since April 11 and, according to the information, will continue until May 17.
The rules for corona protection are observed, said a spokesman for the Kornwestheim drive-in near Stuttgart. Cinema goers stay in their own cars, tickets are only available online, and they are then scanned through the window at the drive-in cinema. The sound of the film reaches the cars via the car radio. In many cinemas, snacks are delivered to the closed car door after ordering online.
