The performances start around 9 p.m. The first film Thursday evening is the musical classic “Grease”. And the drive-in experiment at the airport is a return to the past of cinema and cars. There are only a few who know drive-in cinemas from their own experience – like Salzburg Airport managing director Bettina Ganghofer: “My parents were enthusiastic drive-in cinemas. They just loved it. They could take their drinks with them. The children could provide them with pillows and sweet popcorn on the back seat. But I think the experience was 50 years ago. I had a lot of fun and joy and you felt bigger than you were. ”
Average of 200 cars needed per performance
The drive-in cinema takes place on the apron at the airport – where the machines normally park or maneuver. The right partners were evidently found in the project – on the one hand the airport manager and on the other a risk-taking culture maker and conductor Elisabeth Fuchs: “The total budget is 1.2 million euros,” says Fuchs. “And if we can make sure that there are always 200 cars on average, then things will go well. If that’s not the case, then I have to sell a house. “
Every evening until the end of August there is a program on the airport apron – at first exclusively cinema, alternating with car concerts from July, Fuchs explains: “The Salzburg Philharmonic will play there. Philipp Hochmair will come, the Hollerstauden will appear, cabaret artist Ingo Vogl and Quadro Nuevo from Bavaria. So it’s a colorful program. “
Drive-in cinema at Salzburg Airport starts
32 euros entry per car
The entrance fee is collected per car and is 32 euros. Tickets can be booked online. A huge screen takes care of the picture. For the sound in your own car, a smartphone with the appropriate app is required, says Fuchs: “There are three versions: either you have a connection from the smartphone to the car radio, then it’s easy. The second option is: you have a smartphone, but an older car radio – then we have boxes to rent for free. And if you don’t have a smartphone, we can lend it for free. ”
The first screening in the drive-in cinema at the airport on Thursday evening is already sold out.
Normal cinemas can unlock again from Friday
However, the normal cinemas can reopen from Friday. This became surprisingly known with the new Covid 19 easing regulation on Wednesday. More on that in Cinemas are allowed to open again: industry is surprised (news.ORF.at; May 27, 2020).
