Drinking more than 6 cups of coffee a day increases the risk of dementia

Suara.com – Coffee, which has been believed to help a person become more focused and energized, can actually have the opposite effect if consumed in excess. A study found that those who drank more than six cups of coffee a day had an increased risk dementia as much as 53%.

Research conducted by the University of South Australia shows that too much drink coffee actually dangerous for brain health.

Researchers have found that excessive coffee consumption is associated with a smaller total brain volume and an increase in brain volume dementia risk. The study’s findings were published in the journal Nutritional Neuroscience.

The study was conducted at UniSA’s Australian Center by assessing the effects of coffee on the brains of 17,702 respondents aged 37-73 years. The results found that those who drank more than six cups of coffee a day had a 53 percent increased risk of dementia.

UniSA lead researcher and PhD candidate Kitty Pham said, “Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world. But with global consumption of more than nine billion kilograms per year, it is important that we understand the potential health implications.”

“This is the most extensive investigation of the relationship between coffee, measures of brain volume, dementia risk and stroke risk,” Pham added.

Dementia is a degenerative brain condition that affects memory, thinking skills, behavior, and the ability to perform daily tasks. About 50 million people in the world are diagnosed with this syndrome.

While stroke is a condition in which the blood supply to the brain is disrupted, resulting in a lack of oxygen to the brain causing damage and making the brain lose its function. Globally, one in four adults over the age of 25 will have a stroke in their lifetime. Data shows that 13.7 million people will have a stroke this year with 5.5 million dying as a result.

UniSA senior researcher Professor Elina Hypponen said while the news may be bittersweet for coffee lovers, the study provides important insights into the link between excessive coffee consumption and brain health. And as with many things in life, according to Professor Hypponen, moderation is key.

“Together with other genetic evidence and randomized controlled trials, these data strongly suggest that high coffee consumption can affect brain health. Although the exact mechanism is unknown, one simple thing we can do is stay hydrated, and remember to drink a little water next to that cup of coffee,” added Professor Hypponen.
