Dressing for Success: Behind the Scenes of StarDance Costumes with Roman Šolec

It’s not just about dance costumes

Under the hands of costume designer Roman Šolec, not only the contestants’ dance costumes are created. He also dresses the jury, he also advised Mark Eben. What else is behind his role in StarDance? “Obviously it’s a team effort, dressing everyone together and fine-tuning the details until the last minute. The designer’s job is to dress up all the dancers. We also have a jury there, which we try to have ready from the beginning of filming. To have all the suits in charge, beautiful dresses for Mrs. Taťána, of course for Richard, so that we have it coordinated so that the jury has some concept within the fashion trend. Of course, there is also Marek Eben, we chose his tuxedos and suits together in the salon so that they were perfect and fit. We also tried to pull out a velvet tuxedo this year in an unusual way, it was specially made for it, so I’m glad that it turned out well. Then there are other fragments, such as openings, special numbers under the choreography of Marko Zelinka and his colleagues, so all the openings that appeared there follow me as an artist. So I have to come up with a design concept for them, which is then implemented here at the workshops of Czech Television, where there are excellent tailors.” exclusively explained by Roman Šolc for Blesk pro women.

Almost 300 costumes

As Roman Šolc revealed, almost 300 costumes will be created for the entire StarDance line. However, he tried to breathe new life into some, upcycling especially very expensive feathers, recycling accessories and some of the existing dresses.

Camera guards

Since the TV image does not convey the same color intensity as in reality, there are certain rules for dealing with tonality. “When a material is chosen that we feel works for us, we run behind the camera to look at it, and it’s mainly stripes and checks. So we had a big problem finding, for example, a strip that would be distinctive and not look grainy on the camera. And of course then, that’s the other thing, it’s a special white color, completely pure white, it can’t be on camera because it would be burnt, it wouldn’t work, so how many times do we make dresses that are cream or light gray, but then on camera white,” the costume designer said.
