Dresden – One man’s suffering, another man’s joy: For years, the city of Dresden has been discussing how to deal with street music. Now the administration is making a new move – and wants to force the street musicians to take their lunch break.

With the exception of the Augustus Bridge, the artists will in future rest with their work between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. This emerges from a town hall proposal to change the street art statute.
This became necessary because the state management classified an older decision from July 2022 as unlawful.
For Mayor Stephan Kühn (44, Green Party), the paper that is now circulating in the committees is a compromise between the interests of annoyed residents and street musicians.

Kühn: “Above all, the noise associated with exercise, especially from amplifier systems, is often perceived as a nuisance and is the subject of many complaints. A lunch break should therefore be introduced and amplifier systems should be avoided in selected play areas.”
In the new template, the town hall also plans to differentiate between “street music” and “street art with musical accompaniment”. The latter should be allowed to take place between 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. indefinitely. The city council will decide in March whether the new proposal will actually be implemented.
