Dresden: renovation in the south is delayed

Dresden. Due to bad weather, the next section of the refurbishment of Caspar-David-Friedrich-Strasse will not start on January 6th, but on Wednesday, January 13th.

The traffic restrictions and road closures announced by the city have therefore also been postponed by a week. However, bus route 85 has only been running in the direction of Wasaplatz since Wednesday – as planned.

Since December 19, Caspar-David-Friedrich-Strasse has been free for buses in both directions again. Since the beginning of the construction work, sections of the road had to be closed again and again, at times collective taxis were organized for the residents, especially for the senior citizens from two homes on site.

A one-way street rule applies until March

The extensive renovation of the street has been running since August 2020 and is expected to last a total of three years. In December, the first construction phase between Schurichtstrasse and Caspar-David-Friedrich-Strasse 14 was completed – two months earlier than planned. Here, the southern sidewalk and the roadway were built together with full closure.

In the next step, the city now wants to renovate the northern sidewalk between Räcknitzhöhe and Schurichtstraße, make the bus stop there barrier-free and replace the asphalt. This should be milled from next Wednesday.

Caspar-David-Friedrich-Strasse in the direction of Teplitzer Strasse is to be closed on one side until March 23, 2021. Meanwhile, a one-way street rule applies on the Räcknitzhöhe and Caspar-David-Friedrich-Straße past the construction site.

In spring, the residents will have to be prepared for further restrictions. Because from March 24th to July 28th the road will be completely closed. The reason: On the footpath downhill in the direction of Teplitzer Straße and on the roadway, further road and civil engineering work is planned.

Residents have to be patient until mid-2023

During the full closure, passers-by can walk on the renewed sidewalk. Crossing aids are intended to make it easier for residents to get to the properties. The city promises that the medical center at Caspar-David-Friedrich-Strasse 37 will remain accessible.

After the planned completion of the second construction phase in September of this year, four more are to follow on the approximately 1.2 kilometer long road. Normality is only in sight for the residents in mid-August 2023, when the work should be completed.

From the point of view of many Dresden residents, the renovation of Caspar-David-Friedrich-Strasse was urgently needed. The city had to mend the asphalt again and again in recent years, and DVB also had concerns about safety.
