Dresden: memorial statue destroyed – left-wing extremists attack sea of tears Regional

Dresden – It is a place of silence and commemoration, where the victims of the Second World War are to be commemorated. But on Monday night, left-wing extremists destroyed the “Sea of Tears” memorial on the Dresden Heidefriedhof.

In a letter, an “autonomous action group denazify Dresden” confesses to the deed. She justifies her destruction with the words: “… the dead were not victims, they were perpetrators.”

In 2010, the state capital had the memorial built for around 60,000 euros, artist Małgorzata Chodakowska (55) created a bronze sculpture. “The girl is a symbol of new life – the crossed arms stand for calm and humility to think,” says the artist to IMAGE. “The water basin symbolizes new life and shed tears and is intended to extinguish the burning Dresden.”

State protection has started investigations into damage to property that is harmful to the public. Police spokesman Uwe Hoffmann (38): “We are examining the letter of confession and consider political motivation, especially from the extreme left camp, to be likely.”

Again and again left-wing extremists attack memorial sites of the destruction of Dresden – inscriptions are usually sprayed with graffiti shortly before the anniversary, wreaths are destroyed. “Anyone who destroys a memorial for the bomb victims of February 13 is not only violently attacking a place for peaceful mourning, but also a symbol of admonition and reconciliation,” said Saxony’s state parliament president Matthias Rößler (67, CDU) to BILD.

The act was “an expression of sheer hatred”. The artist now wants to repair the statue with a Dresden foundry and “heal her wounds.” Małgorzata Chodakowska: “I’m speechless that there are people who do something like that, it works about living peacefully together.”
