DRESDEN. Dresden will be the fourth German city to join the international network for lifelong learning (“Learning Cities”). The city provided information on Wednesday about a corresponding UNESCO classification. A total of 64 cities in 35 countries were included in the city network founded in 2015. Education Mayor Jan Donhauser (CDU) spoke of immense value for the city and “exciting prospects”. The exchange in the network will further strengthen the local educational landscape.

“From early childhood education to comprehensive continuing education programs, we offer a wide range of learning opportunities for people of all ages and social backgrounds,” explained Donhauser. With the ongoing development of the overall concept “Lifelong learning in Dresden”, we are committed to a holistic educational approach. “The goal is clear: to make education accessible to everyone and prevent disadvantages.”
“Through the exchange in the network, we want to learn from other learning cities nationwide and worldwide, share our exemplary practice and develop innovative solutions together,” the education mayor further emphasized. Dresden is motivated.
Maria Böhmer, President of the German UNESCO Commission, referred to education against the background of global urbanization: “By 2050, 80 percent of all people will live in cities. This development presents opportunities.” Cities are cultural and economic innovation centers. But one should not lose sight of the risks. Social and ecological challenges are increasing. “Our answer to this is education. Lifelong learning opens up perspectives for people, brings them together and allows society to grow.” Hamburg, Bonn and Gelsenkirchen are already members of the network.
