After the corona death of a student: testing in the race against a murderous virus

Dresden – Large-scale operation in Dresden-Strehlen: Since Thursday evening More than 100 students are stuck in their dormitory.
–
The reason is the death of an Indian fellow student († 30). Since he had no known previous illnesses, it is feared that he fell victim to the so-called Delta variant, which recently claimed so many victims in India.
Jogging was still possible, cyclists no longer: “I wanted to go to the Elbe quickly,” said a young student. “Then the police told me that I could no longer leave the building, otherwise there would be a complaint.”
In the evening, the students then received an email: A person had died of Corona within a very short time, and there was a high probability of a mutation. Massive testing has been carried out since yesterday, Friday, and everyone has to stay in quarantine until Tuesday.
The health department was more specific on Friday: “The deceased traveled to Germany from Bangalore in the last week of April,” said Frank Bauer (32), head of the health department. “Before entering the country, he took a negative test.”

Purchases should be organized on a large scale
As required, the student remained in quarantine until May 9. From then on, however, he moved freely through Dresden again: On May 25, he suddenly came to the hospital with severe symptoms, and died on Tuesday.
“He had lived in a shared apartment in the dormitory, and had in the meantime had contact with several people,” said Bauer. “It has not yet been confirmed that it is a variant of the coronavirus.” The investigation is still ongoing.
In the meantime, all residents of the home are subjected to a PCR test, with all positive tests being examined to determine whether it is the so-called delta variant.
By 5 p.m., the health department had already tested around 170 people with the help of the DKMS and the fire brigade, and is assuming a maximum of 200 people in the building. However, some day trippers did not return on Thursdays when they found out about the lockdown.
A depressing situation for the residents: “The hallways are quiet,” said the jogger in quarantine. “I actually wanted to celebrate my father’s birthday. My refrigerator is now empty, too.”

She should get her test result this Saturday. The health department and the student union are now trying to organize a food supply.
Around 6 p.m. yesterday, a first delivery of toast, something sweet, eggs and margarine was parked in the hallways. The Studentenwerk now offers a shopping service.

That is how dangerous the dreaded Delta variant is
The so-called Delta variant worries the virologists: First detected in India, it is now spreading in Great Britain.
“Initial findings from England and Scotland suggest that there may be a higher risk of hospital admissions than the alpha variant,” according to a recent risk assessment by Public Health England.
Variant B.1.1.7, which was first discovered in Great Britain, is called the alpha variant. An Indian study confirms that the mutation is 50 percent higher in infection, and there are also indications that the vaccine protection is less effective.
There are now eleven confirmed cases of this variant in Saxony.
