Dresden. On Thursday morning there was another climate protection protest in Dresden. Members of the group “Extinction Rebellion” blocked the intersection of Königsbrücker Straße and Stauffenbergallee.

The protest began at eight o’clock and was officially registered. The police confirmed that the action took place – but currently have no further information on how the action went.

Extinction Rebellion had announced the action in advance. In the statement, the group explained why it had chosen this particular intersection: the reason for this is the proximity to the Military History Museum. The group wanted to use this to point out the connection between war, the military and the climate crisis. “The Bundeswehr is increasingly confronted with the consequences of the climate catastrophe, especially in the area of disaster protection. At the same time, the Bundeswehr itself says it is responsible for 0.3 percent of Germany’s CO₂ emissions,” the group explained.

Worldwide, the military is responsible for around five percent of climate-damaging emissions. In addition to this issue, the protesters want to draw attention to the fact that the climate crisis threatens global security by exacerbating conflicts and creating new security threats. (SZ)
