Dresden Caritas Diocese Launches Street Donation Drive for Social Projects

Dresden (dpa / sn) – Caritas in the Dresden-Meißen diocese is again collecting donations for social projects. Around 70 people will be out on the streets on its behalf between April 6th and 15th, as the Catholic welfare association announced on Wednesday in Dresden. “Whether advisory services, youth projects or help for refugees, our support goes to people on the margins of society,” said Caritas director Matthias Mitzscherlich. The donations from the street collection are primarily used to finance offers that are not covered by public money – according to the announcement, around 10,500 were collected at the previous autumn collection in 2023.

According to the information, it is not just about material help. “People who have found themselves in a difficult social situation should be able to lead a self-determined life again as quickly as possible.” Caritas, the largest diocese in Saxony, maintains around 200 services and facilities that support, advise or care for people in social emergencies. The approximately 9,000 employees are supported by numerous volunteers.

At the same time, Caritas warned against fraudsters and pointed out that its collectors can identify themselves with a numbered document that is issued with the sealed donation box. There and also on the collection list there is a telephone number “where you can check the accuracy of the documents”.
