Drenthe Week: Westerbork Camp memorial center in danger of sinking and emergency shelter Beilen accommodates Ter Apel refugees

Every day, buses run from Ter Apel to the emergency shelter in Beilen. Refugees sleep there in tents and the mayor watches this with disgust. And the Camp Westerbork Memorial Center is in danger of sinking. More money is needed. Here you can read an overview of the most important news from our province last week.

Five buses drive from Ter Apel to the emergency shelter in Beilen every day, and both the COA and the Mayor of Midden-Drenthe Jan Zwiers see this with dismay. “Yes, it is in tents. I don’t think this is the shelter that the minister meant by saying that I will organize a good shelter when I am a minister.
The tent will remain in Beilen until January 15 at least.

The true soccer player knows that there is no better place to play soccer than on a natural grassy surface. The choice to install natural grass in the Oude Meerdijk was once again welcomed with open arms by the selection of FC Emmen.
FC Emmen defender Mike te Wierik: “Only when it is dry you have scratches with artificial grass. I have woken up several times with the duvet stuck to my leg.”

Clearly not, that’s what the Dutch government in Drenthe can expect when they look for a place for nuclear waste. “It has been going on for decades, the same debate,” says Anno Wietze Hiemstra, mayor of Aa en Hunze. “There was already a big protest in 1979. I think a- now with everything in the messengers there will be a lot of struggle again.”
