The ravages of time are gnawing at a cultural monument in Dreieichenhain, the district of Dreieichen: The Obertor in the old town is losing plaster between its half-timbered coffers. Since last week, wooden beams have been temporarily securing the east side of the facade so that plaster that has become loose does not fall onto the lane underneath and damage cars or people.
In consultation with the Office for Monument Preservation in the Offenbach district, the private company Bürgerhäuser Dreieich, which is responsible for the Obertor, is now commissioning renovation work, which will probably last until June. The historic city gate will be scaffolded, the loose compartments will be stabilized, rebuilt and plastered, joints between the woodwork and plastered compartments will be closed. “Two small windows are also being replaced in the lower area,” says Benjamin Halberstadt, operations manager of the town houses. The wood and partitions are then cleaned and repainted.
The upper gate was built from quarry stone almost 600 years ago; the half-timbered wall was only used around 1800. The city of Dreieich is responsible for the Untertor, which was built a century later. There, the city’s own Dreieichbau checks whether there is also a need for renovation.
