Carbisdale Castle was once built for Mary Caroline, Duchess of Sutherland. At the time, she was involved in a bitter dispute with her in-laws, which led to it being referred to as the Castle of Spite.

The Duchess therefore chose a hillside property close to and clearly visible to the Sutherland Estate, which belonged to her in-laws. Carbisdale’s clock tower was built with just three clock faces, with the side facing the estate left blank because the Duchess wouldn’t even tell the hated ones the time. That’s how it worked back then.

Over time, Carbisdale Castle also served as a refuge for members of the Norwegian royal family during wartime. And later as a youth hostel. This was the case for almost 60 years from 1945. A time when the beautiful building also began to crumble.

“After long and careful thought, I have come to the conclusion…”

The current owner – a lawyer – said she purchased the property in 2022 to save it from certain ruin. This is now complete, she says, which is why the castle should now be returned to new hands.

“After long and careful consideration I have come to the conclusion that it is in the best interests of Carbisdale Castle for me to step down as trustee. “I did what I promised, which was to restore the castle from an almost dilapidated building to its former glory,” the owner told the BBC with.

The castle has a whopping 4,000 square meters of living space. There is also an outdoor area that is around 120,000 square meters in size. It includes a lake and a beautiful forest landscape. So if you ever dream of a castle in Scotland, you will find it here official advertisement the opportunity to do so.

The castle is accessed through impressive entrance gates, which are flanked by round stone columns. The path then leads about 800 meters across the property and ends at the fenced gravel driveway directly in front of the castle. It couldn’t be more stately.
