Draupadi Murmu, Former Teacher Becomes India’s First Indigenous President

Draupadi Murmu officially became the President of India for the period 2022-2027 after winning the vote on Thursday (21/7). Here is Draupadi Murmu’s profile.

Murmu officially became India’s first indigenous president and the second woman to hold the office.

The 64-year-old woman was born to the Santhal tribe in Odisha on June 20, 1958. She is a graduate of the Arts at Rama Devi Women’s College.

Murmu was married to Shyam Charan Murmu, a banker, who died in 2014. The couple has two deceased sons and a daughter.

He started his career working as a teacher before entering the political arena. He worked as assistant professor in Shri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Institute, Rairangpur and junior assistant in irrigation department of Government of Odisha.

Murmu later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1997 and has been a legislator twice in 2000 and 2009.

In 2015 Murmu was appointed the first female governor of the eastern Jharkhand state and served until July 2021.

Some see Murmu’s presidential election as a victory over tribal political aspirations and a breakthrough moment for a society long neglected and exploited under several governments.

Murmu was officially elected President of India on Thursday (21/7) after winning the vote.

In the voting process, Murmu won with 64% of the vote beating his rival Yashwant Sinha who got 36% of the vote.

Now Murmu will serve as President of India from 25 July following the end of the current Indian President Ram Nath Kovind’s term.
