Jack Draper’s Grit and Growth Shine in Australian Open Triumphs
Jack Draper’s journey at the Australian Open has been nothing short of extraordinary. The 23-year-old British tennis star has defied expectations, securing three consecutive five-set victories to reach the fourth round in Melbourne for the first time. His latest triumph came in a nail-biting 6-4, 2-6, 5-7, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (8) win over Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic, a match that ended at 12:55 am on Saturday morning.
“I still have a long way to go, but this is a huge drive forward,” Draper said. “The fact that I’ve come through three five-set matches, mentally and physically, it doesn’t happen often. That’s a testament to the work I’ve done and the place I’m in. So very, very proud of that.”
draper’s resilience has been on full display throughout the tournament. Just two days prior, he staged a remarkable comeback against Thanasi Kokkinakis, who had served for the match in the fourth set. Against Vukic, the stakes were equally high, wiht the Australian just two points away from victory in the first tie-break.
“The tie-break in the fourth set, I don’t think either of us played a loose point,” Draper reflected. “I think both of us played realy good tennis. I was brave, especially towards the end. In the fifth-set tie-break, it was tough. Obviously whent three-love up. The momentum changes. especially in 10-point tie-breaks. It’s tough. It’s like pot luck. I was brave in the moments that mattered.my coach was telling me to be aggressive when I could, and I did a good job of showing that side.”
Draper’s physical endurance has frequently enough been questioned, but he has embraced his past limitations as part of his growth. “No, not really,” he responded when asked if he had a message for his doubters. “It’s the truth. I’m done after two sets moast of the time. I mean, that’s just the way it is, and that’s somthing that I’m aware of, and I needed to be better at.”
Next up for Draper is a blockbuster clash against four-time grand slam champion Carlos Alcaraz. “Carlos is a special talent and an amazing player, someone I have a good friendship with so I think it’s gonna be an incredible match,” Draper said. “Hopefully my body pulls up, I can give it my all, and it will be a great contest.”
