Drancy: Jean-Jaurès elementary school targeted by arson

It is with amazement that the students of the Jean-Jaurès elementary school in Drancy and their parents are likely to discover their establishment this Thursday morning. During the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, the premises were the target of an arson attack that destroyed two classrooms and rendered two others unusable.

According to the office of the mayor Aude Lagarde (UDI), they are police officers of the anticriminality brigade who, while criss-crossing the neighborhood around 23:30, saw smoke coming out of the building. They then alerted the fire department who managed to contain the fire.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the elected representative said she was “outraged by this heinous act”. “When the school is attacked, it is our children and the Republic that are attacked, she wrote, announcing that she had filed a complaint. School is the place of all learning, the place where we build equal opportunities and fraternity between future citizens. No motivation can justify a crime of this type.

Aude Lagarde will be present this Thursday morning in front of the gates of the school, which has 263 students, to reassure parents. All students will be able to attend class.

“The school, which is classified as a priority education network, has doubled CP and CE1 classes. They will therefore be grouped together at least until the All Saints’ Day vacations, which begin this Friday, to allow all the pupils to be accommodated,” stresses the Academic Directorate, which strongly condemns this fire. According to the office of the mayor of Drancy, there is no doubt that the fire was caused by a criminal. Traces of break-ins and hydrocarbons were found on site.
