Injured and one dead after suspected gas explosion in New York
Dramatic rescue in the New York borough of the Bronx: a house caught fire here as a result of a suspected gas explosion, and part of the building even collapsed. Heavy smoke billowed from the windows and adjacent properties. An officer’s body cam video shows a woman standing on the street in front of the inferno yelling, “Somebody’s in there.”
About 100 rescue workers on duty
She means the house next door. There is an injured woman trapped under the couch. She cannot free herself. The officials do not lose a second of time. They run, putting themselves in great danger. Because the building next door is on fire, the fire threatens to spread to the neighboring house. “10-6, we’re inside,” an officer speaks into his radio. The police turn over the sofa that buried the woman moaning in pain. They grab the injured and take them outside. Breathe easy, she’s saved.
The explosion happened around 11 a.m. (local time) in a house in the Woodstock district, the New York Fire Department said. About 100 firefighters and rescue workers responded. Mayor Eric Adams said eight people were injured. Two people were hospitalized with serious injuries, Adams said. One person died.
Cause of explosion in New York’s Bronx gas?
“Our thoughts go out to family members who are grieving the loss of life. The quick response of the New York City Fire Department, police and local residents has allowed many of those affected to avoid being seriously injured or dying in any way,” Adams said at the crime scene.
“We had a prior report of someone smelling gas,” Chief John Hodgens said. “There was an explosion and at the moment we are investigating what caused that explosion.” (lmu)
