An incredible video captured the moment Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) agents fired twelve times at a suspect in an incident that happened Tuesday night in Pompano Beach.
BSO said the incident happened shortly after 9:30 pm near the 700 block of Northwest Fifth Avenue, where officers were responding to a shooting call.
Apparently, the suspect sees the shoe and starts firing over 20 rounds from his rifle.
Surveillance video shows four officers running toward the house with their guns drawn. One of them shouts: “Put the *** gun!”
But the officers, still unfired, change position and approach the building. When they see the armed subject, they demand that he drop the weapon. Apparently the man is not obedient and the officers shoot as they go, as we can see in the security video of the building.
Then, two officers start shooting non-stop for almost 20 seconds. Then they stop and leave the frame as they move towards the house. The firing then continues for another 30 seconds. It is not clear if the suspect was returning fire.
“The subject is Scott Simmonelli, 52, who lives in Pompano Beach. We have encountered it on other occasions, and the Baker Act of mental incapacity has been applied even after other acts of armed violence in the community,” he said. noted. Gregory Tony, Broward Sheriff.
A roommate said the first call was about the man who lives in the building. A woman said she called 911 after Simonelli approached her door with a flashlight trying to get her to leave her apartment.
“When I went into my mom’s room to ask him for something, he said something and then shot him,” Alexis Barofsky said. “We both called 911. I ran to my room with my children, I went to bed and put a blanket on us, and I prayed that nothing would happen to us.”
The woman said she had problems before with Simonelli, who did not like the children running around. She also called the police in November when the man threatened her with a gun. The man said they were the worst neighbors.
A neighbor who did not want to appear on camera said she was scared. “Two weeks ago there was a shooting in the street and he came out with what looked like an AR-15 rifle. At that time I told my husband that this was a problem because if he did that often, at any time we could get. wounded by a stray bullet.”
Before police could proceed, Simonelli was injured, managed to drop the weapon and officers approached him to render aid until Pompano Beach paramedics arrived and took him to the hospital.
“The latest information we have is that he is in serious condition, but everything seems to indicate that he will recover from his injuries,” said a Broward Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, Claudine Caro.
