A very wild scene was seen by tennis spectators in Budapest on Tuesday evening. China’s Zhang Shuai scraped her first-round match after being awarded a clear point at 5-5 in the first set. When she got upset, she had a panic attack, left the court with tears in her eyes, and her opponent Amarissa Kiara Tóthová from Hungary rejoiced at the victory.
At the French Open, her story went around the world. There, the 34-year-old Chinese woman told reporters about her disputes with her home tennis association and how she has not seen her loved ones for three years because she cannot play or train in her native country.
Since February, she has not even won a match due to a bad mental state. And in Budapest, the 45th player in the world won’t add any winners either.
At 5:5 and 15:15 against the home player, she put a cross forehand on the doubles line. The referee called the car. The umpire went to see for herself, and she also gave the truth to the linesman, even though the cameras revealed a trace on the white line.
Zhang Shuai called her supervisor, but he did nothing about the situation. The upset tennis player then had a panic attack, was breathing rapidly and, after consulting a doctor, scratched the match.
I went to check the controversial point between Shuai Zhang and Kiara Toth and I really don’t have words for how bad the umpire was for this mark. @WTA it’s really time you do something and investigate these, they can’t make such big mistakes at this level. When she shook hands with the home opponent and the referee, she made it clear that she didn’t like the behavior of the fans who whistled and booed her either.
“A shocking scene in Budapest. Zhang Shuai was robbed when she complained, she was ignored and booed. The celebration by the fans and the opponent was absolutely shameful,” Portuguese tennis reporter José Morgado summed up the incident.
