Dramatic masses of snow in California: 45,000 people are running out of supplies

The weather in California is going crazy. For around two weeks, violent winter storms have caused huge amounts of snow in the otherwise sun-drenched US state. The districts in inland California along the Sierra Nevada are particularly affected. Popular destinations in mountainous communities like Lake Tahoe or Lake Arrowhead are choked with snow.

In the metropolis of Los Angeles, too, people are amazed at the unusual snow. The mountains in the background of the famous Hollywood sign above the Los Angeles district of the same name are completely covered in white. According to the region’s weather service, the snow line fell to around 300 meters in some places.

California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for 13 counties in the state last week because more than 82,000 households had no electricity. Even the California National Guard has been mobilized to support relief efforts.

The situation for the residents of the San Bernardino Mountains east of Los Angeles was particularly bad recently. The 450,000 inhabitants of the region were completely cut off from the outside world by the massive amounts of snow. Houses and shops lie under a thick blanket of snow. The roads in the mountainous region had to be closed.

As the news channel ABC recently reported, the people in the San Bernardino Mountains are running out of supplies. “Help us!” wrote local residents in large letters in the snow.
